What I Learned From Marilyn Monroe About Beauty and Confidence

Most women have grown accustomed to being termed “Pretty only with makeup”. I have met people who predict and judge by the kind of style a woman pursues — because of these vague statements, many women have failed to appreciate themselves by having a lack of confidence in themselves, as well as following standards they do not want to abide by.

This form of misogyny is prominent in many societies. Just a few days ago, I was called a whore for dying my hair blonde. Probably because it is seen as unnecessary and attention-seeking if a black person like me does this — in reality, I dyed my hair blonde because I liked it. I didn’t do it for anyone. Many issues that have resulted in harsh criticism like this have made women belittle themselves by reducing their standards in a way that doesn’t suit them.

Marilyn Monroe also faced such harsh criticism.
